These things are very painful; bittered people really can spread their negetivism aroung quite strongly... I understand your motivation not to say good bye to her - but I am afraid she will not change and at her age, she will probably sink deper.
But I really like what you are saying here: "not to ask for pity and help but help others first when I can". This motto means that you will never become end like Mari!
