That's sad. It's very difficult for people to break out of a mindset like that, but I'm sure your good friendship is a comfort. Perhaps she can go overseas for a holiday and take herself right out of her everyday life, or change jobs or move to somewhere new? That might enable her to let go of bad mental habits.
