What is the value of life?

Recently I saw the film "Never let me go". I like the original novel and it's interesting to see how they changed it into the movie, I think they really did a good job. It was fascinating enough as a fiction, but at the same time it makes us ask ourselves something.

How important is human's life?

Of course it's very important, but how much? Is it worth sacrifice of other's life?
After such an enormous loss of lives, this question sounds really heavy.
