Again, an old house in Kyoto
May. 4th, 2019 05:47 pmAbout 2 weeks ago I have gone to one-night trip to Kyoto and stayed in a small, renovated old house. It was a house of common people, maybe the typical one most of which have been demolished for the modern town development recently. Kyoto has been a big city where many people have lived in for centuries so most of the houses are small with little daylight and just a small space for gardening. This not-good condition has created the unique charm of these small houses, now many old houses are renovated as hotels or shops.
I'd like to show my LJ friends some photos of the house I've stayed.

This is the entrance. This house is located at the end of narrow alley, surrounded by other houses. There is a small dart floor to take off the shoes.

Next to the dart floor of entrance there is a small room with a wooden floor, then the main Tatami room. Behind the main room there is a tiny garden - this kind of small space with small greenery is one of the characteristics of old houses in Kyoto.

This looks like a closet, but behind the sliding doors there is a steep staircase. This is another characteristic.

The steep stair looked down from the second floor. The owner of the house has put the handrails on the wall, they were very helpful.

On the second floor there were 2 tatami rooms where we used as bedrooms.
This is a house to rent to the tourists, it also had a small kitchen, toilet and bathroom. Old drawers are used as a cupboard.

I love the old houses very much, so staying in this house was a really fun! Also, those wooden materials in the house reminded us of our childhood when we had visited our grandparents' houses or other old houses.
